In the frame of this talk, I will introduce innovative methods for functionalising carbon-based nanomaterials, such as 1D carbon nanotubes and 2D graphene nanosheets. I will particularly focus on alternative techniques to produce high-quality graphene nanosheets, emphasising the creation of metallic impurity-free graphene structures and their significance in electrochemical applications. Additionally, I will cover recent advancements in developing novel nanostructured 2D composites with enhanced properties, especially for post-lithium-ion battery storage. The discussion will demonstrate how carbon nanomaterials can be utilised to create various nanoscale topographies, paving the way for periodically functionalised structures suitable for a wide range of applications, including energy storage and conversion.
